Special IBAF on Monday 9 October 2017 for Local Democracy Week

Local Democracy Week runs from 9 to 15 October and gives local people opportunities to be listened to and influence decisions.

Following a well attended Isleworth and Brentford Area Forum at Spring Grove House last Thursday, another will take place on Monday 9 October 2017 at 7.00 pm at Brentford Free Church, Boston Manor Road, TW8 8DW to mark Local Democracy Week.

Special because that evening we plan to focus on the IBAF Action Plan where each councillor has been sponsoring a particular piece of work within our area, an Open Forum devised led by young people from local schools and the input of agencies and council departments delivering in Isleworth and Brentford.

The meeting agenda has just been published and will include updates from

  • Transport for London
  • Hounslow Highways and its Hounslow Council Contracts Management counterpart
  • Hounslow Council Enforcement
  • Hounslow Council Parks
  • Hounslow Council Traffic and Transport.

All residents are welcome to attend and contribute alongside the area’s 12 ward councillors.

Gillette South: Tower turned down

More than a year on the stocks and eight months since a formal proposal to build a 14 storey block on the corner of Syon Lane and Great West Road, Hounslow Council’s planners have finally turned down the application.

During 2016, the applicant’s agent hosted a number of exhibitions but declined to arrange, present and explain the concept and plans at a public meeting.

Following the submission of a formal planning application on 5 January 2017, I arranged a meeting at St Francis of Assisi Church Hall later that month. More than 120 residents, Hounslow Council planners and councillors but not the applicants or their agent attended the event. The occasion was previously reported here.

The application was refused for a number of reasons when assessed against current Hounslow, London and national planning policies including its impact on neighbouring properties and the setting of listed buildings as well as the lack of affordable housing.  There were more than 80 objections to the proposal.

The site has permission to be used as a car park until 30 September 2017.

I B A F on Tour

At Hounslow Council’s Annual General Meeting on 23 May 2017, I had the honour of being appointed to the Chair of the Isleworth and Brentford Area Forum for 2017/2018.

Until now, the location of the IBAF meetings have been pretty static, held in Brentford but this year we are taking this bi monthly democratic event on the road and trying as best to give advance notice of items planned for discussion and decision.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be held in Syon Ward at the St Johns Community Centre, 80 St Johns Road, Isleworth then on 28 September 2017 we shall be at the splendid Spring Grove House, West Thames College.  Current proposals for locations and items for future meetings through to March 2018 can be found here.

A special meeting of the IBAF, to mark Local Democracy Week 2017, is being planned for early October 2017 where the focus will be on the current IBAF Action Plan and a Young People’s Open Forum; details will follow when firm.

All are welcome to attend and to contribute via the regular Open Forum agenda item and by submitting written questions prior, particularly relating to matters from the IBAF’s four constituent Wards, Osterley & Spring Grove; Isleworth; Isleworth; Brentford but also other Hounslow Council matters.

Northumberland Estate: Parking consultation this month

Late February this year, residents of Roxborough Avenue handed me a petition seeking parking controls in their neighbourhood. This was passed to Hounslow Council’s Traffic Team.

The petition was prompted by the extension of the Syon Lane Station CPZ in January 2017, displacing parking by station users and employees from local companies to roads on the rest of the Northumberland Estate, reducing daytime parking availability for residents.

Since then, meetings and discussions have taken place with officers and it has been agreed that there should be an informal consultation on the extent of a demand for a parking scheme beyond those signing the petition.

Households west of Quakers Lane in, Northumberland Avenue, Roxborough Avenue, Harewood Road, Albury Avenue, Campion Road, Parkwood Road, Downs View and Wood Lane will receive a letter from Hounslow Council to explain how controlled parking zones work and a questionnaire to gauge interest.

The letters should be distributed from Friday 7 July 2017 with a closing date for responses either by post or online of 4 August 2017.

After the closing date and analysis of the results of the consultation, residents will be notified of the results of the consultation and any future action. Should these show a demand, a detailed CPZ scheme will be designed and the council will consult on this again prior to its introduction.

Syon Gate Garage Site Meeting: Report

It became a standing room only event at St Francis of Assisi Church Hall on Isleworth’s Great West Road, the last Monday night in January.

Hounslow Council planning experts, Robert Coomber and Melek Egren were present to help clarify the application and suggest more confidence in the process that may, perhaps, have been brought in hall prior to the start of the meeting.
